Bennett Valley Birds
Craig Harrison has been out shooting birds--with his camera, of course--and here are three of his handsome avian neighbors
Acorn Woodpeckers are common in Sonoma County’s oak forests, living in extended family groups and caring for young communally. They store acorns in "granary" trees, creating a Swiss-cheese-like appearance. Acorn Woodpeckers range from Oregon south through Central America to Colombia.
White-breasted nuthatches inhabit forests, especially oaks, and use natural tree cavities for nesting. They are active little birds with an appetite for large seeds which often brings them to backyard feeders.
House Finches live in natural habitats, including chaparral and oak savannah, but also around barns and stables in rural areas. They are a familiar visitor to backyard feeders and love sunflower seeds.
